Died from Eating Matches

A very sad case of poisoning occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Stanfield, a mile and a half north of town, last Friday at 2 o’clock. Their little girl, about fifteen months old, while playing with parlor matches ate the substance off the ends of a number of them, just how many nobody knows. She became violently sick and the parents gave her mild and other antidotes, but she continued to grow worse. At 8 o’clock in the evening Dr. Robert Davisson was called, and he found the child in a very dangerous condition. She continued to grow worse all day Saturday, going from one spasm into another, until the end came.

It was a sad blow to that home and many are the friends who sympathize with the bereaved parents and relatives. The funeral was held at the home Sunday, Rev. Lowe officiating, and the remains of the once beautiful cherub were laid beneath the flowers and sod in the Winterset cemetery.
