Afton Tribune
The many friends of father Messenger will be pained to learn that he was recently struck with paralysis. Mr. Messenger is one of the pioneers of the Baptist denomination in this part of Iowa, and was going to fill an appointment in Madison county when stricken down. When found he had fallen out of his buggy and was lying on the ground in an insensible condition. He was carried to a house near by and not being recognized, it was supposed he was intoxicated and for some time but little attention was paid to him, but as soon as his real condition was ascertained every thing possible was done to make him comfortable. He was carefully conveyed to his home where all that medical skill, kind friends and good nursing could accomplish was done to restore him to health and vigor, but he died on Wednesday evening.
