Michael Ray McVay, Creston

Michael "Mike" Ray McVay, 52, of Creston died of cancer Jan. 16, 2001 at his home.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 21 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston with the Rev. Dwayne Henrichs officiating. Burial was at Moon cemetery, Grand River township, Macksburg.

Mike McVay was born Sept. 11, 1948 in Adair County to Forrest Holmes and Velma Helen (Klos) McVay. He was educated in the Thayer area schools. He married Betty Jane Allen. He later married Joan Owens in Corning.

Mike was employed as a monument engraver for 35 years with Des Moines-Winterset Monument, American Monument and Arizona Granite in Arizona and Wittenbeck Monument in Ankeny. In 1993 he moved to Creston where he and Joan operated M & J Custom Lettering. In 1997 they purchased Union County Memorials.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother and a grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; four daughters, Hayley at home, Delta Dawn "Dee-Dee" (husband Kevin) Wilson of Runnels and Tammy Jessen (special friend Kevin Nelson) and Teresa Early, both of Creston; five sons, Eric McVay (special friend Robbie Sallee) of Audubon, Carl DeGonia (financee Chriystal Kneedler) of Creston and Patrick McVay, Forrest "Bud" McVay (wife Michelle) and Nathan McVay (wife Sabrina Freeney) all of Winterset; five brothers, Duane McVay (wife Sharon) of Rogers, Ark., John McVay (wife Caroline) of Harrison, Ark., Larry McVay of Nevada, Mo., Dan McVay of Waterloo and Calvin McVay (wife Ethel) and Abe McVay (wife Barbara) both of Winterset; a brother-in-law, Robert Malone (wife Rosie) of Creston; three sisters, Helen Finnegan (husband Kenny) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Judy Tull (husband Von) and Beth McGrath (husband James) both of Afton; and 18 grandchildren.
