Long-Time Resident of New Virginia Died at Iowa City Hospital
C. E. Read, a resident of Lincoln township the past 13 years died at the State University of Iowa hospital in Iowa City Saturday, Nov. 28, after a short illness. He was 82 years of age.
Mr. Read had lived in the New Virginia community for 68 years before coming to Lincoln township in 1940. He was born at New Virginia Nov. 28, 1871. He attended Iowa State college at Ames, graduating there with the class of 1894. One of his class-mates there was George Washington Carver, who later became one of the nation's outstanding scientists.
Had he lived until next spring Mr. Read would have completed 50 years as a member of the New Virginia Masonic lodge.
Mr. Read was married Dec. 30, 1909 to Edith L. Keeney who survives him. He also leaves a son, Charles E. Read of Morris, Ill., and four daughters, Mrs. Donald Williams of Mingo, Mrs. Lloyd McCreary of Brecksville, O., Mrs. John Dew of Norwalk and Mrs. Fred Stauffer of Des Moines.
Brief services will be held at Winterset from the Richards Funeral home at 1:15 p.m. this Wednesday. The funeral will be held from the New Virginia Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Glenn Parrott, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church will officiate. There will be grave-side services at the New Virginia cemetery by the New Virginia Masonic lodge.
