Winterset Resident Died at Clarinda Tuesday After Long Illness

Herbert J. Chickering, a resident of Winterset since 1931, died Tuesday Aug. 18, at Clarinda, after four years of failing health. He was 79 years of age.

Mr. Chickering was born in Montgomery county, near Red Oak, March 24, 1874, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chickering. His early life was spent near Red Oak and his active years were spent in farming.

When he was 17 years old, he moved with his parents to Denmark, but the family returned to Red Oak in 1898. He moved to Winterset in 1931.

He was married Nov. 25, 1903 to Jennie M. Goltrey. They were parents of 10 children. The wife, a daughter, Dorothy and three sons, Harry Clayton, Harley Raymond and Herbert Ross Chickering preceded him in death.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Darlene Glasscock and Mrs. Janice Comp of Winterset, Mrs. Rose Luedeke of Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Betty Messerschmidt of West Des Moines, Ia.; two sons, Wayne Chickering of Winterset and Jimmie Chickering Pierce of Villisca; a brother, George Chickering of Webb; and a sister, Mrs. Blanche Fitzpatrick of Wichita, Kan.

Funeral services will be held this Friday at 2 p.m. from the Wolf Funeral home in Villisca. Burial will be made at Villisca.
