County Briefs – St. Charles

Mrs. Mila Steele Dougherty died March 2 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Scott Wise near St. Mary’s. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, March 4, in the Chrisitian church in St. Charles. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

She is survived by Mrs. Lois Wise of St. Mary’s and Kyle Dougherty of Des Moines, also one sister, Mrs. Flora Bowers of Des Moines.

Her parents, Stephen and Jane Graves Steele were early settlers of South and Scott townships of Madison county.

MIHLEN STEELE DAUGHERTY

Mihlen Oakie Steele, daughter of Stephen and Jane Steele, was born June 26, 1870 in Madison county. She spent her early life in the home of her parents who were early pioneers in St. Charles.

On June 21, in the year of 1893 she was united in holy wedlock with R. S. Daugherty (sic) of St. Charles. To this union was blessed with two children. For the most part of her life, she resided in St. Charles. The years she spent here were her most pleasant and enjoyable.

Failing health caused her to give up her own home and for about the past nine years, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Earl Wise.

She passed away at the home of her daughter, near St. Marys on March 2, 1938, having attained the age of 67 years, 8 months and 6 days.

Her departure is mourned by her daughter, Mrs. Lois Wise near St. Marys and her son Kyle of Des Moines; one sister, Mrs. Flora Steele Bower also of Des Moines; and four grandchildren, Doyle and Clinton Wise and Yoeland and Yovelina Dougherty, besides many other realtives and a host of local friends.

Early residents of St. Charles will remember the deceased's sister Mrs. Nana Steele Bourden, who passed away Nov. 9, 1899, and was interred in the St. Charles cemetery.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, March 4, in the Christian church in St. Charles. The Rev. E. W. Mueller of St. Paul's Lutheran church at Martensdale, officiated.
