Madison County Resident For 35 Years Died in Des Moines
Mrs. Julia Grouell, who spent 35 years as a resident of the Worthington community in Madison county, died Tuesday, March 8, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, after a week's illness. She was 81 years of age.
Mrs.Grouell was the former Julia Wilhelm, daughter of David and Wilhelmina Neubauer Wilhelm. She was born May 31, 1873 near Monticello and spent her early life in that community.
She was married to Harry D. Grouell at Monticello on Jan. 9, 1907. They established their home on a farm in Ida county where they lived until coming to Madison county in the spring of 1914. Her husband died in 1941 and in 1949 Mrs. Grouell moved to Des Moines to make her home with her daughters, Esther and Mary Katherine.
At the age of 14 years she united with the United Brethren church in Monticello where she was active in Christian Youth activities. She later transferred to the Monticello Methodist church and after coming to Madison county affiliated with the Worthington Methodist church.
In addition to her two daughters, Mrs. Grouell is survived by a sister, Mrs. Minna Palutzke of Glendale, Calif.; and two brothers, Leonard Wilhelm of Los Angeles and John Wilhelm of Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services were held here Saturday from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
