IRVIN BETHUNE, Afton

Irvin Bethune, 70, of Afton died July 2, 2007, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 10, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs officiating. Burial was at Groesbeck-Ashwood Cemetery in rural Lorimor.

Irvin Bethune was born Sept. 4, 1936, in rural Lorimor to Davis Marion and Ada Lenore (Groesbeck) Bethune and was a 1955 graduate of Afton High School. Following graduation, he worked for several years with Forrest Austin at the salvage yard and then with a telephone company. Irvin was a veteran of the United States Army, serving for two years. After his discharge, he worked as a telephone lineman for the Afton Telephone Company and Interstate 35 Telephone Company until 1978. He moved to LaCenter, Wash., where he briefly worked for GTE and then with the Lewis River Telephone Company. He moved back to Afton following his retirement in 1998. His memberships included the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing and the National Hot Rod Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Bethune.

He is survived by two uncles, Kenneth Bethune of Camas, Wash., and John Bethune of North Plaines, Ore.; two aunts, Margie Enloe of Indianapolis, Ind., and Sarah Hass of Mechanicsville, Pa.; and several cousins, including Dan Groesbeck, George Groesbeck and Ruth McDowell, all of Lorimor, and Esther Means of Creston.
