Funeral service for G. W. Hawkins was held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in Des Moines at the First Presbyterian church at East 12th Street conducted by Rev. Anderson. This and burial with impressive military rites in the Glendale cemetery, Des Moines were a touching tribute of the love and esteem with which he was held by all who knew him.

He had been in failing health for more than a year from a heart ailment and passed away at the Veterans’ hospital in Des Moines Sunday, April 9.

Gilbert Walker Hawkins

Gilbert Walker Hawkins, son of A. A. and Emma Hawkins was born at Delmar, Clinton county, Iowa, November 20, 1892.

At the age of nine years he moved to Earlham with his parents where he grew to manhood. He received his education in the public school here and graduated from high school with the class of 1911. He attended the Cedar Rapids Business College in preparation for his life work as an accountant and book-keeper.

At the beginning of the World War Gilbert enlisted in the U. S. Navy and made several crossings of the Atlantic, he also served some eight months in France at the Base Supplies Depot. After 27 months of service he received his honorable discharge and was soon after united in marriage to Edna Hale, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hale of Tripoli, Iowa. To this union was born two sons, Gerald Franklin and Gilbert Eugene. Theirs was a happy home and he spared nothing that was in his power to make life worth while for his family.

He was a member of the East 12th Street First Presbyterian Church where he served as a member of the choir and also a member of the Masonic lodge.

He had been in failing health for more than a year from a heart ailment and passed away at the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines, April 9, 1939, survived by his wife and two sons, his aged mother, Mrs. Emma Hawkins, one brother, A. O. Hawkins, Freemont, Nebraska; four sisters, Mrs. Roy Imboden, Earlham; Mrs. T. G. Sheldon, Des Moines; Miss Mildred Hawkins, Woodward State Hospital, and Mrs. Fred Manatt of San Jose, California; and three half sisters, Mrs. Katherine Rossiter, Low Moor, Iowa; Mrs. Alice Rice, Waurika, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Bertha Tipple, Delmar, Iowa; besides many other relatives and hosts of friends.

Those attending the services from this community were, Mr. and Mrs. John Moreland, Mrs. Scott Shifflett, Mr. Ben Beeson, Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Boyle and Ruth Boyle, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Imboden, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lenocker and Mr. and Mrs. M.O. McCleary.
