SAMUEL S. RHOADS DIES

Pioneer Lincoln Township Citizen Died at Home Last Thursday

Samuel S. Rhoads, pioneer resident of Lincoln township, died at his home south of Winterset last Thursday, June 13, at the age of 85 years.

Mr. Rhoads was born in Westmoreland county, Penn., April 9, 1855, the son of Peter and Susan Rhoads. When he was quite young the family moved to Drakesville, Davis county, Iowa. At the age of 16 he came to Winterset to work and this community had been his home for fifty-eight years.

He was married to Eliza Read, October 24, 1879, and they were the parents of eight children. Mrs. Rhoads and an infant son have preceded him in death.

Immediately after his marriage, Mr. Rhoads started farming, an occupation that remained his primary interest through life.

Mr. Rhoads is survived by his seven children: Susie Sage and Edna Debok of Peru, Nelson of Van Wert, Alberta Betterton of Knoxville, Ross, Fred and Earl Rhoads of Winterset. He also leaves nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and a number of nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, by the Rev. Charles E. Courtney of the Winterset United Presbyterian church, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
