MADISON COUNTY AND NEARBY

An Early Settler of Madison County Gone

David Stanton, son of James and Rachel Stanton, was born February 6th, 1831 in Belmont county, Ohio. He was married to Hannah J. Smith April 26th, 1854, moved to Pilot Grove, Madison county, Iowa in 1856, being on of the first settlers in the county. Hannah J., his wife, died near Earlham, Iowa April 19th, 1885 and was buried in Bear Creek cemetery. He was married to Jane Spencer February 26th, 1896, with whom he lived near Redfield, Ia., until his death.

He was a birthright member in the Friends church and remained an active member until his death, which occurred on February 18, 1900, aged 69 years 12 days. He was laid to rest in the family lot in Bear Creek cemetery. His son, Barclay of Perry and daughter Mrs. E. D. Griffin of Earlham were present during his sickness and funeral. During his sickness he was often heard exclaiming praises to the Lord. When told he could not get well, he said he was ready to die. He passed peacefully away on the bright Sabbath morning, seeming without pain or a struggle leaving abundant evidence, that he had gone to meet the Savior and many loved ones above.
