Obituary, JAMES S. LORIMOR

James Sayres Lorimor, son of Benjamin Lorimor and Eleanor Sayres, was born at Claysville, Washington county, Pennsylvania, March 26, 1827; died in Winterset, Iowa, April 28th, 1909, aged 82 years, 1 month and 2 days.

His childhood and early youth was spent in the place of his birth. In 1837 his parents removed to Guernsey county, Ohio, and remained there a few years and then removed to Washington county, Ohio, not far from Marietta, near a little village named Barlow. Here Mr. Lorimor grew to manhood.

Having made a trip to Iowa in the year 1854 and returned to Ohio, and was united in marriage on March 14, 1855, to Mary J. Harvy. They came at once to Iowa locating for one year in Oskaloosa. In the year 1856 they moved to Madison county and located on a farm in Scott township, where they made their home till 1896, when they took up their residence in Winterset.

In the home were born three sons and two daughters, but two of whom remain, Mrs. N. W. Benson of Winterset and A. H. Lorimor, from Colorado.

Mr. Lorimor has been identified with the church all his life. He made profession of his faith when a young man at Barlow, Ohio, uniting with the associate reform Presbyterian church at that place. When he came to Madison county he placed his membership with the church of the same name in Winterset, which was one of the parent bodies which a few years later became the United Presbyterian church. In 1870 when the United Presbyterian church of Peru was organized he became of the charter members of that organization, in which he was also elected to the office of ruling elder. He continued in membership in the Peru congregation as long as it continued in existence and then brought his membership to the United Presbyterian church of Winterset. Mr. Lorimor was a man well read in the bible and of more than ordinary information on religious subjects. He loved his church and was seldom absent from its services when he was physically able to attend.

Death of J. S. Lorimor

J. S. Lorimor died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. W. Benson, aged 82 years. Mr. Lorimor was one of our most highly respected citizens and one of the pioneers of Madison county, locating here in the early ‘50’s. The funeral will occur Friday at 10:30 o’clock from the home of his daughter and interment will be made in the Rock City cemetery.

The funeral was held from the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. W. Benson, Friday at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. J. H. White and interment was made in the Rock City cemetery.
