Gone Home

Mrs. Rachel Smith, for many years a resident of this city, and whose severe illness noted in these columns a couple of weeks ago, died in Pueblo, Colorado, Sunday, February 18, 1900, aged 68 years. Mrs. Smith came to Winterset with her husband, the late Henry Smith, about 1867, and lived here till three or four years ago when she went to Des Moines and lived with her son Harry, and later to Pueblo. She leaves three sons, William T., Charles F. and Harry H., all of whom live in Colorado.

The remains arrived in this city Tuesday in charge of her son Charles, and were taken to the residence of her cousin, W. C. Henery, where the funeral services were held Wednesday.

Many are the kindly recollections of Mrs. Smith by the people of Winterset. A lovable life has ceased. Peace to her memory.

Death of Rachel Smith

Mrs. Rachel Smith, widow of Henry Smith, died at the home of her son, William Smith, at Pueblo, Colorado, last Sunday morning, Feb. 18th; age 68 years.

For some time past the deceased had been suffering with blood poisoning, which was the cause of her death.

“Aunt Rachel,” as she was familiarly known was, for about twenty-five years, a resident of this city; and she had many warm personal friends in this community. A few years ago she removed to Des Moines where she continued to reside until a few months ago. She went to Denver with her son Harry, and since that time she has been making her home with her son, Charley, at Florence, Colo., and her son, William, at Pueblo.

Her remains were brought to this city Tuesday evening, accompanied by William Smith and wife, and yesterday afternoon the funeral occurred from the residence of her cousin, W. C. Henry, the ceremonies being conducted by Rev. Dr. Ely. Her remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in Rock City cemetery.

Those present at the funeral from out of town, were her son Charley and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Mullons of Afton, Mrs. Mullons being Mrs. Smith’s twin sister, and Mr. Bridges of Thayer, this state.
