Sam Zink, 65 Dies Suddenly

Heart Attack Proves Fatal For Well-Known State Legion Officer

Funeral services with military rites, will be conducted this Saturday afternoon, Aug. 3, for Samuel B. Zink, who died suddenly Tuesday night at his home here.

“Sam” as he was familiarly known, presided at the installation of new Legion officers of Green Rogers post in Winterset Tuesday evening. He went to his home following the meeting, and died within about 30 minutes, or at around 10 p.m. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Perhaps the most prominent and active Legionnaire in the history of the local post, Sam held every Legion office, including commander, during a period of 30 years.

His longest tenure in local Legion office was that of service officer, a position he held at the time of his death.

Hundreds of Madison county war veterans benefitted from Sam’s efforts in helping them to enter veteran’s hospitals and to receive other Legion aids. He also served a long number of years on the Madison county soldier’s relief commission.

At the time of his death he held the office of state sergeant of arms for the American Legion, and had made plans to attend the national Legion convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey in September.

In February of 1955, Green Rogers post 184 held a special “Sam Zink Night” program in honor of the deceased. At that time he was presented a life-time American Legion membership card, the highest honor available to a Legionnaire.

Many local Legion members often referred to Sam as “Mr. Legion” of Winterset.

The son of Simon and Marie Rebholz Zink, he was born June 3, 1892, at Twelve Mile, Kentucky.

On Oct. 30, 1921, he was married to Georgia Neal in Boone county, Iowa. They were the parents of seven children, all of whom survive.

Sam came to Winterset in 1926, purchasing a dray line here. For many years he held the contract to haul freight from the Rock Island depot to business houses throughout the community. He also served a number of years as Winterset city assessor.

In recent years, he was a town policeman, and followed the trade of cement finisher.

A veteran of World War I, he served in the United State Navy from June 20, 1917 to Dec. 3, 1919.

Surviving are the wife and seven children, Charles S. Zink of Fairbanks, Alaska, Mrs. Bernadine Hager of Dayton, Ohio, Robert Zink of West Des Moines, Mrs. Doris Pearson of Erie, Pa., William S. and Harold Zink of Anamosa, Ia., and Mrs. Georgia Nichols of Denver, Colo.; seven sisters and two brothers in Kentucky; and 11 grandchildren.

Officiating at the services this Saturday at 2 p.m. will be the Rev. Fred Boyce, pastor of the St. Paul Lutheran church. The funeral will be at Richards Funeral Home, with burial in the Winterset cemetery.

Military rites will be conducted by Green Rogers post of the American Legion.
