Death of Miss Sara Garrett

Miss Sara Lerruse Garrett, a former school teacher of this county, died at her home in Fairmont, Nebraska, Friday, February 14th, at the age of 74 years. Miss Garrett was a daughter of the late William and Tabitha Garrett, pioneer settlers of Madison county and she and her brothers and sisters were born in this county. The deceased began teaching school in this county and it was while she was teaching at the Penn Center school that she helped form the institution of the annual school picnic. She went from here to become superintendent of the Manning schools. Her youngest brother, R. V. Garrett is now dean of the Junior college at Earlham. She was one of the first women in Iowa to be a superintendent of schools and served in this position for nine years.

Miss Garrett was one of Nebraska's well known educators, having been high school principal at Norfolk, superintendent of the Rushville schools and for 15 years from the date of its founding till she resigned and retired from educational work in 1920, she was register of the Kearney State Teachers college. She graduated at Valparaiso University and did other college work at Fremont college, Callanan college and the University of Nebraska. She was a member of the Eastern Star and for 52 years had been a member of the Baptist church.

Funeral services were held Sunday February 16th at the Fred Bader chapel in Fremont, and burial was made at Ridge cemetery. She is survived by two sisters and five brothers; Mrs. A. J. Nichols, Fremont; Mrs. Ella C. Whitenach, Klaworth Falls, Oregon; M. J. Garrett and C. F. Garrett, El Paso, Texas; E. O. Garrett, Cedar Falls; J. M. Garrett, Plain Mountain and R. V. Garrett, Earlham.
