Mrs. David Brittain, well known Madison county resident, died at 4:30 p.m. last Wednesday afternoon, at her home in Jefferson township. Mrs. Brittain who was 68 years of age, had been in poor health for some time, and she became critically ill the first of last week.
The deceased was Sadie Thompson, daughter of Robert and Henrietta Thompson. She was born February 29, 1872, and always made her home in this county.
On April 4, 1900 she was married to David Brittain, and they were the parents of five children. The son died in infancy, and two girls, Fonda Gertrude and Edna Edith preceded her in death. When a young girl she joined the North River United Presbyterian church, and at the time of her marriage to Mr. Brittain, she transferred her membership to the North River United Brethren church.
Mrs. Brittain took an active part in the work of the church, and was also an active member of the Womens Christian Temperance Union. For many years she served as secretary of the Madison county union. She taught school in Madison and adjoining counties, and was a member of the Crown Rebekah lodge 360 at Winterset and was active in organizing the Madison county Farm Bureau.
She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Estella Brittain, and Mildred Waltz, and two grandchildren, Naomi Elizabeth and Harold Warren Waltz. She also leaves four sisters, and three brothers: Mrs. L. L. Craven of Stuart, Mrs. George May, of La Junta, Colorado, Mrs. Joseph Saylor of Greenfield, Mrs. Gina Godwin of Des Moines, Henry Thompson of Montor, Kansas, Edward Thompson of Clarinda, and George Thompson of Pekin, Indiana.
The Rev. E. A. Elliott of Des Moines, a former pastor and friend, and the Rev. Windsor, conducted her funeral services at the U. B. church near her home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
