SCOTT COLE, LLOYD HUDSON ARE KILLED

Truro Soldier is Reported Wounded in Action in France

Two more Madison county soldiers were reported killed in action and one more was reported wounded within the past week. all three casualties were from the western European front. The two deaths were:
Sgt. Scott L. Cole, of Winterset

Pvt. Lloyd A. Hudson, of Macksburg

The soldier wounded in action was:

Pvt. John J. Gracey, of Truro, Iowa

Sergeant Cole was 24 years old and was the son of Mrs. Emma Cole of Winterset. She received the telegram last Wednesday, informing her that her son had been killed in action in Holland, Sept. 25.

As Sergeant Cole was a member of the Paratroop infantry, and that was the date of the airborne invasion of Holland in the Arnheim and Nijmagen areas, it is assumed that his death occurred in that area.

Sergeant Cole was one of Winterset's most popular and widely known young men. He was born near St. Charles, just across the line in Warren county, July 21, 1920, the son of William and Emma Cole. Following the father's death 15 years ago, the family came to Winterset, and with the exception of two years in California, his home had been here since that time.

He attended the Winterset high school where he won honors as an outstanding football player and in his senior year was elected the most popular boy in his class. He graduated with the class of 1939.

He enlisted in the army two years and three months ago and soon transferred to the paratrooper corps. He had been overseas just a year, and participated in the invasion of Normandy where he received the silver star for gallantry in action.

Sergeant Cole is survived by his mother; two brothers, Saunders Cole of Portland, Ore., and Jimmy Cole of Pasadena, Calif.; and six sisters, Mrs. Vera Reed of Winterset, Mrs. Minnie Matlage of Des Moines, Mrs. Ella Armstrong of St. Charles, Mrs. Zelma Consolver of Des Moines, Mrs. Marie Kahler of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Elizabeth Faux of Winterset.

Private Hudson was killed in action in France on Sept. 11, according to a telegram from the War department received last Wednesday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hudson of Macksburg. The preceding week the parents had been notified that their son was missing in action.

Private Hudson was widely known throughout the Macksburg community, where he was born and spent all his life, prior to entering service. He attended the Macksburg high school and had been in service about two years.

Pfc. John J. Gracey of Truro has been wounded in action in France and is now in a hospital.
