Page 1, Column 7Death Rev. T. W. Howard
Word was received here of the death of the Rev. T. W. Howard, a former pastor of the Christian church in Winterset. Mr. Howard was pastor of the First Christian church 1892-1897, and went from here to Colorado, because of the poor health of Mrs. Howard. Mrs. Howard died there with tuberculosis.
In 1925, he was stricken with paralysis, and he had made his home in Tucson, Arizona, the past year. His daughters, one of whom was a member of the faculty of a Methodist hospital in South America, and Miss Elizabeth, who was born in Winterset, now an evangelist, have been caring for him. Recently he had been obsessed with an idea that old friends were in need of him out in the desert. He slipped away on June 17th, from home, and authorities were immediately notified. Active search in the lowlands failed, but after four weeks his body was found on a hillside, where he had fallen, striking his head, apparently on a rock. It is said that the probable reason he was not found sooner was because no one thought he would be able to climb the hills.
After he left here, Mr. Howard worked under the mission boards of the Christian and Congregational churches in Colorado, Michigan, and the Mountain whites of Tennessee.
Orpha Adkinson received the news of Mr. Howard’s death from Florence Howard on Monday, August 11th. Memorial services were held at the Congregational church in Tucson, July 24th, and the body was taken to Trinidad, Colorado, for burial.
