Death of John Brown Deal

Word was received here last week of the death of John Brown Deal, at the age of 90 years. Mr. Deal formerly lived in this county, and was the father of Mrs. S. F. Young, of Winterset. He had been in poor health for several weeks, and Mrs. Young had been at his home in Jefferson for the past four weeks.

Mr. Deal was born in Waynesburg, Virginia, October 8, 1839, and came west with his parents, in a covered wagon to McLean county, Illinois, in 1847.

His marriage to Miss Madora Johnson took place March 13, 1862, and they were the parents of five daughters and eight sons. Mrs. Deal died nine years ago, and he is survived by his children, Samuel Deal and Mrs. Eunice Williamson, of Bloomington, Illinois; John Deal of Newton, Kansas; Will, Lee and Frank Deal, of Jefferson; Mrs. L. E. Rogers of Des Moines; Mrs. May McNeal, of Kansas City, Missouri; Mrs. Young, of Winterset; Charles Deal, of Tracy, Minnesota, and Miss Lillie Deal, in the home at Jefferson. Two sons, Arthur and Fletcher, preceded the parents in death.

In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Deal moved to this county and they lived here for ten years. Since then they resided in Greene county. While here they occupied the farm in Scott township, now owned by D. E. Hollingsworth.

In addition to his children , Mr. Deal leaves four sisters, thirty grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Jefferson, Thursday afternoon, and burial was made in the Jefferson cemetery. Those driving from here to attend the services included; Edgar Harrel and daughter, Miss Mary, Mr. and Mrs. Will Sellars, P. G. Rollstin, and Mr. and Mrs. Young.
