WORKMAN CRUSHED FATALLY IN ACCIDENT AT SARGENT QUARRY

Ralph Gibbons, 28-Years-Old Died Tuesday at Des Moines Hospital

One man was killed and two other injured in a series of accidents that occurred this week at the Sargent Brothers quarry four miles east of Winterset.

Ralph Gibbons of Winterset was fatally injured Monday when a heavily loaded hoist fell on him and crushed him. He was rushed to the Winterset hospital and later taken to a hospital in Des Moines, where he died of internal injuries Tuesday.

Gibbons was 28 years of age and was married. He had been employed by the Sargent firm for the past two years and had just moved to Winterset from Peru three weeks ago. His home was in Osceola where his mother still lives.

A. Lindburg, shovel operator at the quarry received severe cuts when hit by the shovel as he was attempting to use that machine in aiding Gibbons. He was treated for his injuries at the Winterset hospital.

The next day, Laurel Little of Winterset received severe cuts and bruises when struck by a belt that had broken at the quarry. He was taken to the Winterset hospital where his condition Wednesday was reported as good.
