In the passing away July 4 of David Mills, another old settler has gone to his reward. He came to this country in the early fifties when the prairies were almost a trackless waste and applied his energies toward making for himself and family a home. That he succeeded is attested by the fine half section farm he owned at the time of his death. As a young man he was frugal, honest and a tireless worker, and these traits of character he adhered to throughout his long life. He was plain of speech and never left one in doubt as to what he thought on any question. He was an exemplary citizen, a fine neighbor, an indulgent husband and father, and his death will be sadly mourned outside the family circle.

Deceased was born in Henry county, Indiana, in 1824, and had he lived until Oct. 16 next would have been 82 years old. Born of sturdy old Quaker parents he espoused their religion and remained a faithful and consistent member through life.

On March 26, 1851, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Ballard. Two children were born to them, a son and daughter. The son, Calvin, died in early manhood; the daughter, Alice, now Mrs. Spencer of Coal Creek, survives. Death claimed the wife and mother on Aug. 20, 1888. He was married again on Oct. 7, 1889, to Mrs. Ann Wroe, who survives him.

Deceased had been in failing health for over a year, but did not take to his bed until a few weeks before his death. He suffered much, but with great fortitude, and when he realized the end was near, expressed himself as ready and willing to go.

Funeral services were held in Friends meeting house on last Thursday afternoon and a large number of friends and relatives were present. Interment was in North Branch cemetery, beside the remains of his departed wife.
