DEATH OF NEWTON BELL

Was Madison County Pioneer And One of Last Survivors of Civil War

J. Newton Bell, pioneer resident of Madison county, died Monday morning, February 25th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Courtney Couch of Adel. "Newt" Bell as he was familiarly known, would have been 88 years of age May 19th. He has been in failing health for some time, but it has only been the past month that he was bedfast.

The deceased was a son of George and Atha Bell. He was born in Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, but came to this county with his parents, when he was a small boy. They located on a farm in Crawford township about a mile southwest of Bevington. The father was a miller and a farmer. In the 75th anniversary edition of the Madisonian, Mrs. Couch wrote of her father and grandfather's activities in the Civil War. J. N. Bell went to Davenport to enlist when he was 14 years of age, but was rejected because of his youth. The following year, he again went and this time he was enlisted in Company C., 48th Regiment, Iowa Infantry Volunteers.

In 1870 he was married to Anna Louisa Henderson at Winterset and they made their home on several different farms in this county. In 1900 they moved to a farm in Dallas county, five miles northeast of Earlham, and they resided there until after Mrs. Bell died February 6, 1918. Since then he has made his home with Mrs. Couch, but would spend a part of each year with his sons, Frank and Carl of this county.

Mr. and Mrs. Bell were the parents of five children; all of whom survive them; F. E. Bell of Winterset, Mrs. Simon Fox of El Paso, Texas, Carl of Lincoln township, Harry Bell of Bloomington, Illinois and Mrs. Couch of Adel.

Funeral services are being held in Adel this morning at eleven o'clock and the body will be brought here for burial. It is planned to have a short service at the Winterset cemetery at one o'clock.
