Death of L. S. Houlette

Louis Smith Houlette, formerly a well known Madison county resident, died at his home in Miami, Florida, Sunday at the age of 85 years.

Years ago, Mr. Houlette engaged in farming in the Kasson neighborhood. He moved to Winterset and was employed by B. Tucker as a buttermaker, and later was a clerk in the store of C. W. Eastman.

He was an active member of the First Christian church and the Odd Fellows lodge, of which order he was a member at the time of his death.

Funeral services and burial were held at Miami, Tuesday.

He is survived by a son, Cal Houlette of California; and three daughters, Mrs. Grace Hann, Mrs. Blanche Lease and Mrs. Lois Hayse all of Miami.

Louis Smith Houlette

Louis Smith Houlette, son of James Dale and Agnes Smith Houlette was born January 24, 1854 in Menard County, Illinois and passed away at his home at Miami, Florida on February 9th. His boyhood was spent on the Sangamon river in a neighborhood hallowed by Lincoln's early days. At the age of 27 he pioneered in Madison county. He was married at Truro, September 17th, 1872 to Mary Martha McNeley who lived to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Most of their lives were spent at Winterset, later moving to Kansas City and Warrensburg, Missouri. They came to Miami to make their home in 1922. To them were born five children; Harry Maurice who died in infancy, Calvin J. of Long Beach, California, Mrs. Lois Hayes, Mrs. Blanche Leese and Mrs. Grace Hahn all of Miami. He also leaves three grandchildren, Mary Ruth Hayes, Dorothy Endter, and Helen ____. One great grandson,Richard Houlette, one sister, Mrs. Susan Slinker of Des Moines.

In early manhood he united with the Christian church. Soon he was made a deacon, later as elder and until his last sickness he faithfully served at the Lord's table at the Boulevard Christian church. He read his Bible for hours each day and always had his lesson ready for Sunday School, which he never missed. One thing for which he will be remembered was his admonition to youth and all to turn to the right way of living. For __years he was a loyal member of the Odd Fellows and he is a Past Noble Grand. His membership to the Three Score and 10 club was a great joy to him.

Funeral services were held Tuesday February 11 in the Boulevard Christian church by the Rev. Frank E. Harlow, pastor assisted by Rev. G. W. Watson. Burial was in the Miami Memorial park.
