MRS. JOE RUTH, 86 DIED LAST SUNDAY

Was Pioneer, One of County's Oldest Continuous Residents

Mrs. Joe Ruth of Winterset, member of a pioneer Madison county family, and a resident of the county since earliest pioneer days, died at the Winterset hospital last Sunday. She was 86 years of age.

Mrs. Ruth's death was the result of a fall sustained last Thursday in her home, in which she suffered a fractured hip.

Mrs. Ruth was perhaps the oldest continuous resident of Madison county. She was the former Maria Hattel, daughter of George and Margaret Hattel, and was born in Washington county, Pa., on Sept. 29, 1853. At the age of six months, she came in a covered wagon with her family to Madison county. Here she had lived her entire life.

The family settled in South township, where her father homesteaded 400 acres of land. He built a house of sewed logs, which was their home for many years. Marie Hattel grew up in a land of pioneers and received most of her education going several miles through the forest to a log schoolhouse.

She was married on May 8, 1884, to Joseph Daniel Ruth, at the old homestead by the Rev. Mr. Hesswood. They were the parents of three children: Mrs. Della Shreves of Des Moines, Clyde E. Ruth of Clinton, and William Hattel Ruth of Winterset.

When 20 years of age she joined the Methodist church but after her marriage she attended, with her husband, the Baptist church. During the World war she was a leader among the local women in making supplies for the Red Cross. She had been a member of the Womans' Relief corps since 1889.

In addition to her three children, she is survived by her husband; two granddaughters, Ruth Shreves Lagergren of Colorado Springs, Col., and Kathleen Shreves of Des Moines, and one great granddaugher, Kristin Lagergren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in charge of the Rev. J. H. Cochrane of the Baptist church. The Womans' Relief corps participated in the ceremony. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
