Death Came to Aged Citizen After Several years of Failing Health
Thomas Hircock, long-time resident of Madison county, died Monday evening in Winterset at the home of his grand-niece, Mrs. Willard Poland, with whom he had lived for the past year.
Mr. Hircock had been in failing health for several years, and during the past two months had been confined to his bed. He was 81 years of age.
Mr. Hircock was a native of Ohio where he was born on July 27, 1856.
He moved with his parents to Lincoln township, Madison county, in 1859. The family returned to Ohio in 1861 and eight years later returned to this county. In 1888 he moved with his parents to the farm he now owns in Lincoln township.
He lived there until the death of his mother, in May, 1906. Then he moved to the home of his niece Edith Fleener Jackson and continued residing there after her death in 1917, remaining to care for the six children. This was his home until one year ago, when he came to Winterset.
He is survived by two brothers, Charles and W. F. Hircock of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. Emma Smith of Waterloo; and a number of nieces and nephews. Two sisters, and a brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services were to be held at 2:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. H. L. Olmstead, pastor of the Church of Christ. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.

Thomas Hircock, 81, long time resident of Madison county, died Monday at the home of his grand niece, Mrs. Willard Jackson Poland, with whom he had made his home for the past year.
Mr. Hircock, son of Jacob and Louisa Hircock, was born in Huron county, Ohio, July 27, 1856. He moved with his parents to Lincoln township, Madison county, Iowa in 1859. The family returned to Ohio in 1861 and again returned to Madison county in 1869. In 1888 he moved with his parents to the farm he owned at the time of his death in Lincoln township, where he lived until the death of his mother in 1906.
He then made his home with his niece, Edith Pearl Fleener Jackson, who died in 1917. Following the death of his niece, he continued to make this his home, where he helped care for the six Jackson children.
He is survived by two brothers, Charles B. and William F. of Winterset and a sister, Emma Smith of Waterloo and a group of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by the rev. H. L. Olmstead. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
