MARY ALICE SMOOT TAKEN BY DEATH

Death Came Monday Afternoon Following a Long Period of Illness – Burial Wednesday

Mrs. Mary Alice Smoot, long time resident of Centerville, died at her home at 816 Drake avenue at 4:30 p. m. yesterday, following failing health over a two year period and critical illness since November 2.

Mrs. Smoot was a women of splendid character and her death brings sorrow to a wide circle of friends and relatives. She was known for her kindly deeds and will be sadly missed by those who were her acquaintances. She had been a long time and devoted member of the Christian church and lived an exemplary Christian life.

Mary Alice Roberts was born in Hendricks county Indiana near Danville, July 19, 1860. When 10 years of age she moved with her parents to this county where the family settled on a farm near Centerville. Miss Roberts lived with them until she attained young womanhood and in January of 1882 she united in marriage with W. N. Smoot. Mr. and Mrs. Smoot moved on a farm near Winterset in Madison county where they lived until 1905 when they returned to this city. Mr. Smoot’s death occurred here six years ago.

Since her husband’s death Mrs. Smoot, and her only surviving near relative, a sister Miss Maryella Roberts made their home together at 816 Drake avenue.

Funeral services are to be held from the Miller Funeral Home at 2 p. m. tomorrow (Wednesday) and burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
