Mrs. John C. Allen, a well known Madison county resident, died Friday, July 14, at Memorial hospital in Winterset, at the age of 74 years.

Mrs. Allen was the former Maude Givan, daughter of Robert and Ada L. Givan. She was born May 12, 1887, in Adair county. The family moved to Madison county, where her early years were spent. As a young woman she served as a teacher in rural and Winterset schools.

She was married to John C. Allen of Omaha, Nebr., on June 11, 1919. They lived in Omaha for a year, then came to Madison county, farming in Webster township until 1946, when they moved to Winterset.

Mrs. Allen's early church membership was with Wesley Chapel Methodist. Later she transferred to Pitzer United Presbyterian, and in 1947 to Bethel United Presbyterian in Winterset. She was active in her church, as Sunday school and Bible school teacher and officer, and in the women's societies of the church.

For three years she was president of the Madison county Council of Churches.

Mr. Allen's death occurred on Jan. 28 of this year. Mrs. Allen is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ada Banks of Winterset and Esther Allen of Des Moines; a foster daughter, Mrs. Eileen Perdy Friday of Toledo; and two grandchildren, Connie and Allen Banks of Winterset. She also leaves five sisters, Mrs. Edith Bevington of Clarinda, Mrs. Merle Brown of Cut Knife, Sask., Canada, Mrs. Ruth Wilson of Salida, Colo., Mrs. Bell Tucker of Winterset, and Mrs. Verda Hannon of Atlantic; and three brothers, Lewis and Lloyd Givan of Winterset and Carl Givan of Creston.
