NELLIE LOIS BLACK COCHRAN, Winterset, Iowa

Nellie Lois Black Cochran, 91, of Winterset died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 27, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Madison County Health Care System in Winterset.

Nellie was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Webster Township, Iowa, to A.O. and Nora (Hoots) Black. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1931 and later finished training to be come a teacher. She taught country school for three years. On March 8, 1947, Nellie was united in marriage to William Kirk Cochran. They were blessed with one son, Wayne. Nellie and her husband received the Century Farm Award in 1976.

She was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Wayside Garden Club. Nellie also was a member of the Columbian Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Winterset Square Dance Club and Red Hat Club. Nellie took much joy in playing bingo, bowling, square dancing, playing the organ, and collecting angels.

Survivors include her sister, Helen Crawford of Winterset; her sister-in-law, Ida Black of Silver City, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kirk; her son, Wayne; and six siblings — Charles, Glenn, Paul, Maurice, Lorene, and Leone.
