Death of George L. Wagner

George L. Wagner, of Peru, a well known resident of Madison county, died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, Saturday, March 15th, after a short illness. It is stated that Mr. Wagner was chopping some wood in the timber near Peru, last Wednesday afternoon, when he became critically ill. A physician was summoned and he found his condition serious. It was found that he had ruptured himself. He was taken in the ambulance to a Des Moines hospital. The bowels burst and an operation was performed, but he did not recover and died at 7:30 o’clock, Saturday evening.

Mr. Wagner was 73 years of age. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. George Wagner, and was born near Lucasville, Ohio, November 29, 1856. When a young man he moved to Illinois. He was married to Nettie Brown, of Hamilton, Illinois, on September 4, 1890. They were the parents of six children, four sons and two daughters. The family moved from Illinois to Missouri, where they lived until 1911, when they located on a farm southwest of Winterset. They had a closing out sale, Wednesday, January 15, and moved to Peru.

He is survived by his wife, four sons, Leonard, Carl, Edward and Earl, and a daughter, Mrs. Clara Hammer. He also leaves a brother, Henry Wagner, of Portsmouth, Ohio, and a niece, Mrs. Wilbur Murphy.

Services were conducted at the United Presbyterian church in Winterset, Tuesday morning, March 18th, at 10:30 o’clock, by Rev. H. L. Olmstead, pastor of the Church of Christ, and Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

George Wagner

George Leonard Wagner, son of George and Eva Rosena Wagner, was born near Lucasville, Siota county, Ohio, November 29, 1856, and passed away at his home in Peru, March 15, 1930, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 14 days.

When a young man he moved to Illinois. He was united in marriage to Nettie Brown, of Hamilton, Illinois, on September 4, 1890. To this union six children were born, four sons and two daughters. The family moved from Illinois to Missouri where they lived until 1911, when they located on a farm near Winterset.

George Leonard Wagner united with the church at Wyaconda, Missouri, in 1909. His life had been consecrated the welfare of his family. He was motivated by the Golden Rule. A noble father, a loving husband and a worthy neighbor and friend has answered the last call.

Those who mourn his passing are a wife, four sons, Leonard, Carl, Edward and Earl, one daughter, Mrs. Clara Hamner, one brother, Henry Wagner, of Portsmouth, Ohio; a niece, Mrs. Wilbur Murphy, and a host of friends. An infant daughter preceded him into the greater life above.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H. L. Olmstead, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ, assisted by Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, at 10:30 o’clock Tuesday morning, March 18th. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
