Mrs. Mary E. Coffman departed this life early Monday morning, May 12th, at the age of 78 years. She had spent the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Neideigh and family, returning a few weeks ago. Her daughter and family accompanied her here and cared for her in her last illness.
She was born in Holmes county, Ohio, and came to Iowa when a small girl, locating with her parents in Polk county. In 1874 she was united in marriage to Isaac Coffman, and to this union five children were born. In 1886 the family moved to Madison county and located in Webster township, living there until 1911, when they moved to Winterset.
She leaves beside her children, Mrs. Frank Neideigh, of Dexter; Mrs. Elmer Moore and Tom Coffman, of Winterset, and Ben Coffman, of Des Moines, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two brothers, Martin Scarborough and Charles Chipps, of Newton, besides other relatives and many friends. Her husband and one daughter, Ida, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, May 13th, at Tidrick’s funeral home, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mary Ellen, daughter of Wm. Scarborough, was born in Holmes county, Ohio, March 19, 1852. She came to Polk county, Iowa, with her parents, when a small girl. There she lived on a farm and attended the rural school.
She was married to Isaac Coffman, July 2, 1874, and to them five children were born. One daughter, Ida, died at the age of twenty-three and the others are, Mrs. Elmer Moore and Tom Coffman, of Madison county; Mrs. Frank Neideigh, of Winterset, and Ben Coffman, of Des Moines.
After their marriage they lived on a farm in Polk county, then moved to Boone county, and later to Buena Vista county. They came to Madison county in 1886, moving to a farm in Webster township. After a number of years on the farm they moved to Winterset in 1911, where Mr. Coffman passed away, September 1, 1913.
Mrs. Coffman had been for many years a member of the Winterset W. R. C. She was converted when a very young girl and was always an active, faithful Christian. Since coming to town she had been a member of the Winterset M. E. church. She was true to her family and true to Christ – a strong, loving, Christian mother.
After a brief illness she passed away on May 12, 1930, aged 78 years, 1 month and 23 days.
She leaves besides her children, 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and two brothers, Martin Scarborough and Charles Chipps, of Newton, and other relatives and many friends.
Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral service at Tidrick’s funeral home, Tuesday afternoon, May 13th, and the burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
