John Ellsworth Sawhill, son of Alexander and Jeanette Sawhill, was born in Peru, Nov. 25, 1869, and departed this life at his home in New Virginia on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1941, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 26 days.
On November 25, 1894 he was united in marriage to Eliza Ellen Farr, and to this union were born seven children: Mable, Bertha Lenore, and Iva Edith who preceded their father in death in early age, and Tina, Velma, Flossie and Opal who survive him.
Mr. Sawhill at first established his home on a farm near Peru, later moving to Truro where he continued his occupation. Seven years ago he moved with his family to New Virginia, which had since been his home. He was very industrious and took great pride in the manner in which his work was done. He was strickly honest in all of his dealings, a devoted husband and father and a good nieghbor and friend of all he met.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his beloved wife Eliza; four daughters, Mrs. Tina Widaman of Osceola, Mrs. Velma Wright of Twin Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Flossie Stephens of Lenyon, Ia., and Mrs. Opal Huston of Ames, Ia.; a sister, Mattie A. Fennimore of Peru; 14 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; as well as a host of friends.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in New Virginia on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 23, the Rev. W. W. Watson officiating. Interment was made in the New Virginia cemetery.
