Virginia Coughenour, 88, died March 11, 2007, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
Graveside services were held Thursday, March 15, at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer with Pastor Jim Gochenouer officiating.
Virginia Coughenour was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Spencer to Edward and Elsie (Lake) Davis. Her childhood years were spent in Spencer where she received her early education and graduated from Spencer High School. She continued her education at Morningside College, Drake University and Julliard School of Music in New York. In 1944, she married Newton Coughenour.
Following their marriage, they lived in the communities of New York City, New Jersey, Alta, Iowa, Dubuque, Algona and Winterset where Newton served as a Methodist minister. Virginia had been a professional accompanist in New York City, a church organist and choir director, taught music, did arranging for various instrumental and vocal groups, and played for several radio shows. She was a member of P.E.O., Winterset Music Club, Des Moines Symphony Guild, Des Moines Women’s Club, American Guild of English Handbell Ringers and O.E.S.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by several cousins.
Arrangements were handled by Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
