Page 1Death of Mrs. Ed Brown
On last Saturday the body of Mrs. Ed Brown arrived in this city and the funeral took place last Sunday from the home of Mrs. Wainwright. Thus is ended the career of one of the most estimable and influential families of Winterset. Mr. Brown and his wife came to Winterset in the sixties and from the time of their arrival till their departure to Colorado several years ago, they had as much to do with the business and social development of our city as any couple who ever made their home here.
Mr. Brown was exceptionally successful in business and he used all his means in building up the city. Many of the best business houses around the square were the result of his business sagacity, his enterprise and loyalty to his home city. He died in Colorado some five years ago and was buried from the Presbyterian church at that time, and his body was interred in our city cemetery.
Mrs. Brown’s maiden name was Sarah J. Hoyt and she was born at Pomeroy, Ohio in 1841. She and Mr. Brown were married in 1861 and their home for some time was at Agency City, Iowa. Mr. Brown was a soldier in the war of the rebellion and at the conclusion of his term of service they came to Winterset where the four children were born and grew to maturity. They are now all successful business men in the West and were know to the people of Winterset as Fred, Harry, Tom and George. Fred and Tom were present at the funeral.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. Brown was accustomed to make an annual visit to her old friends in Winterset, and she spent several weeks here about two years ago. Her last sickness was long and painful, extending more than a year. When the remains arrived here, her intimate friends and neighbors of former years united in paying a tribute of respect and affection to the memory of their departed friend. Rev. J. S. Corkey officiated at the obsequies and the body now rests beside that of her husband in Rock City Cemetery.
