A native of Winterset who became one of the most prominent architects in the west died last week in California, according to word received here this week.
He was John Frederic Murphy, who enjoyed a distinguished career in architecture in California since 1914. His death occurred at Santa Barbara, where he was a resident.
He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Clarke Murphy, formerly of Winterset. He attended Grinnell college in this state and Columbia university in New York City. His first employment was with a Des Moines architectural firm.
