WILLIAM SLAVENS

William Slavens, son of James and Margaret Slavens, was born in Putman County, Indiana, September 3rd, 1843 and departed this life April 18th, 1917.

On October 27, 1872 he was married to Adeline Gowens of North Salem, Indiana. To this union were born seven sons and two daughters, one son and both daughters having preceded their father to the better land.

The children are Oder Slavens, of Plainfield, Indiana, Jesse Slavens, Crawfordsville, Indiana, Ernest Slavens, of Earlham, Iowa, Myrtle Marion, deceased, Tide, Earlham, Iowa, Garner, deceased, Guy, Waukee, Iowa, Maggie La Foe, deceased and Nitus Slavens, Earlham.

Mr. and Mrs. Slavens spent most of their married life at North Salem, where they were members of the Christian Church and where most of their children were born. They lived the simple, quiet life of good citizens and reared their children to habits of industry and economy.

About three years ago they came to Iowa, settling at Waukee and the first of March this year they came to Earlham to make this their permanent home and to be near their two sons who reside near Earlham.

He leaves to mourn their loss a half brother, Willis Slavens, at North Salem, Indiana, a wife, six sons, several grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends.
