ROLLAND JAMES FRY

Rolland James Fry was born near Earlham, Iowa on September 14, 1894, the son of James W. and Mary Elizabeth Fry. He passed away at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, just a few days after having attained his 75th year.

He attended school at Earlham and Dexter, Iowa.

In 1916 Rolland enlisted in the Iowa National Guard and later his unit served with the Rainbow Division in France during World War I. During this service he was the victim of poison gas attacks which caused injuries that affected his health for the rest of his life.

Rolland worked for many years at Hunter Motor Company in Earlham as an auto mechanic, from which he retired in 1959. Until failing health prevented, he enjoyed the solitude of fishing along the rivers of the area. He has resided at the Iowa Soldiers Home at Marshalltown, Iowa for the past five years.

Rolland was a longtime member of the Earlham American Legion Post and the Rainbow Division Veterans Association.

Two brothers, Marion and Gary, have preceded him in death. A sister, Nellie Peterson of Carlisle, Iowa, and a brother, Roy of Earlham, and nieces and nephews remain to mourn his passing.

Services Held for Rolland J. Fry

Funeral services were held for Rolland J. Fry at Evans Funeral Home on Sunday, October 12.

Rev. Ward Young was in charge of services. Gretchen Brittain was organist. Sally Russell and Helen Evans were in charge of floral arrangements.

Casket bearers were Russell Bricker, Von Fletcher, Charles Fry, Wilbur Russell, Lester Boyle and Jerry Standing. Honorary casket bearers were: Ed Tough, Chas. Thrailkill, Leonard Welch and Ralph Hunter.

Burial was in Earlham cemetery.
