Joseph C. Rippey

Joseph C. Rippey was born in Salem, New Jersey, Sept. 25, 1835. He was one of seven children born to Matthew and Sarah Rippey, four of these survive him: Matthew P. of this place, Thomas of Keithburg, Ill,; John of Coon Rapids and William of Waukee, Iowa.

The family moved to Keithburg, Ill. in 1853, three years later came to Madison county and located in Lincoln township, which has since been the home of the deceased. April 24, 1862, he and Marinda Ellen Thornburg were married. This union was blessed by five children, two of whom are dead, a daughter, who died in infancy and Ellis in August 1895. The three children: Chas. E., of Aztec, New Mexico; George I. and J. W. Rippey of Madison county, Iowa; 9 grand children and 2 great grandchildren mourn the loss of a father and a friend.

Since the death of his wife, Sept. 20, 1896, he has made his home with his son, J. W. In the evening of May 8, 1916, quickly and painlessly, his life went out, leaving behind more than 80 years spent in kindness to his family and in honor to his fellow man. He was very quiet and unassuming, seeking to do his duty as a citizen in a conscientious way. His life was long and he watched with interest and pride, the transformation of the broad virgin prairies into prosperous and happy homes. The history of the community is his history. He well deserves the respect and esteem of his neighbors who so uniformly accord them to him. Who can estimate the value of such a life?

Funeral services were held at the Ord Union Chapel church May 12th, conducted by C. S.Fair, pastor of the Christian Union church, after which all that was mortal of this good man, was laid to rest in the beautiful Winterset cemetery.
