HARRY BELL DIED AT LONG BEACH

Native of Madison County Was Widely Known in Athletic Circles

Harry M. Bell, a native of Madison county who became widely known as an athletic coach in Iowa died last Thursday, Feb. 17 at Long Beach, Calif. He was 59 years old, and had been an invalid for several years.

Mr. Bell, the son of the late Jasper Newton and Anne Louisa Bell was born near Winterset, Oct. 17, 1889, and spent his early life in this county. His parents later moved to a farm near Earlham, and he was a graduate of that high school. He was a graduate of Drake university in Des Moines, and started coaching at Ft. Madison high school. He later coached at North high school in Des Moines. He entered collegiate circles as freshman coach at Drake university, and later became athletic director at Des Moines university, which post he held for five years. After that he coached at Butler college, in Indiana and Lombard college in Illinois. He moved to the Pacific coast 17 years ago and was in the contracting business there.

He is survived by a brother, F. E. Bell of Winterset; and two sisters, Mrs. Birdie Fox of Palo Alto, Calif., and Mrs. E. C. Couch of Adel. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, one of whom, Stanley Bell resides here. A niece, Mrs. Edna Caldwell of Phoenix, Ariz., accompanied the remains here.

Funeral services were held here this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Anderson home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. I. E. Linkletter, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
