C. E. SOUTHWORTH DIES AT CRESTON

Well-Known Resident of Macksburg Community was 83 Years Old

Charles E. Southworth, who spent most of his long life in the Macksburg community, died last Saturday at his home in Creston, at the age of 83 years.

Mr. Southworth was a native of Illinois, where he was born near Bloomington on April 19, 1866. He was a son of Gillett and Adeliza Southworth. As a small child he was brought to Iowa, and at the age of four years he was taken into the home of Ransom and Polly Moon, early settlers of the Macksburg neighborhood. He spent his active life in that community, moving to Creston only three years ago.

He was married in 1891 to Mamie L. Rowe. They were the parents of one daughter, now Mrs. Bonnie Crawford of Creston; and a son, Henry, who died in 1918. They also took into their home a foster son, at the age of one year. He is Milton Garnett of Winterset.

In addition to his wife he is survived by the daughter, Mrs. Crawford; the foster son, Milton Garnett; four grandchildren; two foster grandsons; and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Macksburg Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. Woodrow Caldwell, pastor of the Macksburg Baptist church. Burial was made in the Moon cemetery.

C. E. Southworth, 83, Buried Today

Charles Eugene Southworth, 83, died at his home at 810 West Montgomery street here at 2:45 p. m. Saturday. He had been ill for eight months.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Macksburg at 2 p. m. today. Rev. Woodrow Caldwell officiated. Burial was in Moon cemetery, south of Macksburg.

Charles E. Southworth was born in Bloomington, Ill., April 19, 1866. He was the son of Gillett and Adeline Smith Southworth. He had lived in Madison county, Iowa, most of his life until moving to Creston in 1946. He had retired from farming at that time.

He was married at Macksburg in 1891 to Mamie Rowe, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Crawford of Creston, a foster son, Milton Garnett of Winterset, four grandchildren, two foster grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A son, Henry Rowe Southworth, preceded him in death.

Mr. Southworth had been a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge.

Mr. and Mrs. Wyman Wilson of Chicago attended the funeral of Charlie Southworth here Monday afternoon. Others from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Southworth, Robert and Jimmy, Mrs. Pearl Wilson and Mrs. Winter Mackay of Winterset, and Mrs. Rex Wilder and Mrs. Bonnie Crawford and daughters of Creston.
