DWAIN UMSTED OF MACKSBURG DIES

Underwent Operation for Brain Tumor Last Thursday

Dwain R. Umsted, well known young farmer of the Macksburg community, died last Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, following an operation for brain tumor. He was 21 years of age.

The young man's death came as a shock to the entire community, for he had been in apparent good health. He entered the Des Moines hospital Tuesday of last week for observation and tests, and submitted to surgery last Thursday. He never regained consciousness.

Mr. Umsted was a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Umsted of Macksburg. He was born at Dayton, April 8, 1929, and came with his parents to Macksburg in 1940.

He graduated from the Macksburg high school with the class of 1949, and was salutatorian of the class. He was also active in athletics, dramatics, and music activities in the school. He was a member of the Macksburg Methodist church.

He was married June 17, 1950, in the Little Brown church near Nashua, to Miss Marilyn Baker of Macksburg. He had been engaged in farming with his father up to the time of his death.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by two brothers, Charles, of Hawthorne, Calif., and Gene, at home; and a grandfather, W. E. Umsted of Dayton.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Macksburg Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. B. F. Hamilton, assisted by the Rev. Wilkins. Burial was made in the Moon cemetery.
