HARRY KING DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Former Winterset Business Man Fatally Stricken at Jefferson

Harry C. King, a resident of Winterset most of his life, and a widely-known hardware merchant here for many years, died last Saturday at his home in Jefferson, following a heart attack. He was 55 years of age.

Mr. King was born in Winterset Jan. 27, 1893, the son of Wallace and Jessie King. He attended the Winterset schools and as a young man served through the first World war as a corporal in Winterset's Comapny A, 168th Infantry regiment of the 42nd or Rainbow division. He served overseas in the trenches of France for 18 months.

He was married Aug. 21, 1920 to Zola M. Fredrickson of Winterset. They were the parents of two daughters, both of whom survive.

Mr. King operated the hardware store, now known as the Mills Hardware in Winterset, for 16 years. His entire life was spent in Winterset until 1939 when he sold his store here and moved to Colorado. In 1940 he returned to Iowa, and re-entered the hardware business, this time at Jefferson. Because of ill health he left the hardware business in January, 1946, and lately had been engaged in the furniture business in Jefferson.

He was a charter member of Green-Rogers post of the American Legion here, and had served as post adjutant both here and at Jefferson. He was a member of the Methodist church, and had been a Rotarian for 15 years.

Survivors include his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Robert Christie of Des Moines, and Mrs. Meredith Shriver of Jefferson, his aged mother, Mrs. Jessie King of Winterset; two brothers, Ray King of Winterset, and Roy King of Glendale, Calif.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Slinger Funeral chapel at Jefferson, with military honors. The Rev. Arthur V. Long, pastor of the Jefferson Methodist church officiated. Burial was made in the Jefferson cemetery.

RITES HELD THIS AFTERNOON

Prominent Jefferson Businessman for 8 Years Succumbed to Heart Attack.

Harry C. King, 55, prominent Jefferson business man, died, suddenly Saturday morning at his home in Jefferson. Mr. King suffered a heart attack at his place of business and died shortly after he was taken to his home.

Services were conducted this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Slininger chapel with the Rev. Arthur V. Long, pastor of the Methodist church, in charge. Music was provided by Eugene Melson, soloist, and Mrs. Dean Barker, accompanist. Mr. Melson sang, “The Lord’s Prayer.”

The Floyd W. Brown post No. 11 of the American Legion was in charge of the military burial services at the Jefferson cemetery. Casket bearers were Newton Seela, Paul Osgood, Ned Aldera, Paul Figenshaw, Dr. H. R. Wesson and Glenn Campbell. Buglars were Russell Reberry and Leland Triplett.

Harry C. King, the son of Wallace G. and Jessie King, was born January 27, 1893, at Winterset; and died May 22, 1948, at his home at Jefferson at the age of 55 years, 3 months and 25 days.

Harry received his schooling in the Winterset schools and made his home in Winterset until nine years ago when he moved to Denver, Colo. After a year at Denver, he returned to Winterset and 1940 came to Jefferson where he had since resided.

On June 2, 1917, he entered the army and served overseas 18 months with the 168th Infantry of the 42nd division, the famed Rainbow division of World War I. He was discharged on April 21, 1919.

On August 21, 1920, he was united in marriage to Zola M. Fredrickson and to this union were born two daughters, Viola and Carol Ann.

Harry was in the hardware business in Winterset for 16 years and upon moving to Jefferson became a partner in the King and Seela hardware store here. Due to ill health he left the hardware business in January 1946. After a needed rest, he entered into partnership in the K. and F. Furniture store and was in this business at the time of his death.

He united with the Methodist church at Winterset when a young man and transferred his membership to the Jefferson Methodist church when he moved here.

He was a charter member of the American Legion post at Winterset and had served as adjutant at both the Winterset and Jefferson posts. He also had been a member of the Rotary club at Winterset and at Jefferson for 15 years.

Harry was a man of good character and possessed the ability to make and enjoy his friends by being one. He was known for his honesty and fairness and was always glad to be of help to others in their need.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Jessie King of Winterset; his wife, Zola; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Christie of Des Moines and Mrs. Meredith Shriver of Jefferson; two brothers, Ray King of Winterset and Roy King of Glendale, Calif., and his father-in-law, J. M. Fredrickson of Winterset.

His father preceded him in death in 1923.
