Passing of Mrs. Renshaw

Elsewhere in this issue, appears the obituary of Mrs. Jean Douglas Renshaw, who died at Monrovia, Calif., on June 28th. Mrs. Renshaw was quite well known in Earlham, where they resided for some time after her marriage to Mr. Renshaw in 1910. A severe accident undermined the health of both, Mr. Renshaw passing away in 1921. She remained in Earlham for some time, finally going to California in hopes of benefiting her health. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. F. E. Errington of Portland, Ore., and one brother, living at Fort Wayne, Ind. At her request, burial was made in Hollywood cemetery in Los Angeles.

Mrs. Jean Douglas Renshaw was born in Covington, Kentucky, June 5, 1854, and died at Monrovia, Cal., June 28, 1924, leaving only one brother of her immediate family, now residing in Fort Wayne, Ind.

She was of Scotch parentage, and lived on her father’s plantation until the age of 17, when she removed to Fort Wayne.

In her early life she became an efficient, trained nurse, giving her services to the best where she lived, and also to unfortunate ones whose lives were a continual struggle.

Kindhearted and true to her convictions of right and wrong, her life was full of self-sacrifice in the service of whosoever was shadowed by sorrow, sickness and death.

Her gentle Christian influence eased many a tired soul on its way to the Spirit Land.

She came with her niece to Portland, Ore., in 1903, where she made a host of friends in her chosen calling.

Miss Jean Douglas McDaniel was married to Sylvester Renshaw in the city of Portland, Ore., June 2, 1910, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Errington, Mrs. Errington being a niece of Mrs. Renshaw.

After remaining in Portland for a time they took a short trip through Canada and then went to live in Earlham, Iowa, where Mr. Renshaw had formerly resided.

A severe accident undermined the health of both, Mr. Renshaw passing away June 5, 1921.

Mrs. Renshaw remained in Earlham for some time, but finding her health perceptibly failing, through the advice of friends and relatives, she came to California for its mountains and climates.

She faithfully tried different means and places, but did not recover her lost health. Knowing she was nearing the end of a busy life, she committed herself to the care of the Lord, who had ever been her Master, and quietly awaited the summons.

Her niece, Mrs. Errington, was with her at this time, and surrounded by friends at the close of the day. She was guided through the Gates Ajar and was with us no more.

So closed the last chapter of a well-rounded life of three score and ten, full of service and good will.

We who read in the light of His countenance, thank God for the sleep and rest he giveth his beloved.

Dr. Wright of the West Lake M.E. Church conducted her funeral services at the undertaking parlors of beautiful Hollywood Cemetery. Her body was laid away at her request in this beautiful cemetery of Hollywood, California, to await the coming of her Lord.
