Thursday, May 25, 1933MRS. RAYMOND SMITH DIES
Earlham Special, May 21st-
The funeral of Mrs. Raymond Smith was held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at the Methodist church with Rev. McEldowney having charge of the services. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette composed of Scott Shifflett, Mrs. Charles Soderburg, Mrs. Arthur Marks and Merwyn McLennan.
The following obituary was read: Grace Cade was born October 26, 1885 at De Soto, Iowa. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cade. She was a life long resident of Madison county. She was converted in early life and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Fairview. Afterwards she transferred her membership to the Methodist church at Earlham where she retained membership at the time of her death.
On August 22, 1917, she was united in marriage to Raymond Smith. To this union were born two sons, Dale age 14 and Willard, age 12. She passed away at her home south of Earlham, May 14, 1933 at the age of 47 years, 6 months and 18 days. She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband and two sons, one stepdaughter, Mrs. Mable Speer, three sisters, Mrs. Francis Eisele, Anne and Edith Cade, two brothers Fred and Albert and many cousins besides a large number of friends and neighbors who will miss her greatly from the community.
Burial was in the Penn Center cemetery. Mrs. Smith was taken suddenly ill Saturday evening and died in a short while. The cause of her death was pronounced from internal hemorrhage caused by the breaking of an artery in the head.
________________________Transcriber's note: The obituary says she was born in 1885. Her gravestone says "1886". She was in the 1895 census as age 14 (1880)and the 1885 census as age 2 (1882). Her appearance in the 1885 census assures that the gravestone and obit are incorrect but the two censuses leave doubt as to the exact year she was born.

Thursday, May 18, 1933DEATH QUICKLY TAKES MRS. RAYMOND SMITH
Call for Prominent Local Farm Woman, 47, Came Early Sunday Morning Through Heart Trouble. Services Here Monday.
The terrifying suddenness with which death sometimes strikes down those who are apparently in the best of health was demonstrated again early Sunday morning. With but a few minutes illness, Mrs. Raymond Smith, 47, prominent local farm woman, was taken from her home and friends. So quickly was she stricken that even the doctor hastily called to attend her was powerless. Death was due to heart trouble, an internal hemorrhage taking place when one of the arteries near the heart burst.
Mrs. Smith had been in apparent good health since early in the winter when she was treated for a severe carbuncle. At the time it was noted that her heart action, though regular, was a little below normal but not enough to occasion concern. Shortly before midnight Saturday she was seized by a severe attack of vomiting, and when this attack did not subside, Dr. Carver was summoned. A sedative was administered and the patient appeared to rest easier. Those in attendance went into an adjoining room. When they returned a few minutes later it was to discover that she had fallen into a coma, all too alarming in its foreboding. While her family and physician stood by, unable to help, she quietly slipped away.
Mrs. Smith’s ailment was most unusual. Though no autopsy was performed, it was determined that death was caused by rupture of an artery in the heart, doubtlessly induced by the violent retching. It was believed that the nausea was caused by an infected condition near the spleen.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were held at two-thirty Monday afternoon in the Earlham Methodist church with Rev. B. W. McEldowney officiating. Hundreds of friends were present to pay last respects to one who had moved among them but a few days before. Mrs. Smith’s death came as a shock to the entire community. Burial was in the Penn Center Cemetery.
