Earlham Echo
Earlham, Iowa
Thursday, December 16, 1976

Lyle Summy died suddenly from a heart attack Tuesday evening, December 7, 1976, as he was returning home from work. Lyle, son of William Lester and May Belle Templeton Summy, was born March 31, 1920 near Linden, Iowa. He grew to manhood in the Union Chapel area west of Redfield, graduating from Linden high school in 1937.

During his high school days and until 1942 he worked on farms. He was always happy working at all phases of farming. Following his military service, he went back to farming and continued it until 1962 when an injury caused him to seek a new career.

On September 2, 1941, he was married to Dolores Dunbar of Redfield. They have made their home in the Earlham community since 1947. In 1962 when it became necessary for Lyle to leave the farm, he became employed at the Earlham Echo newspaper office where his wife had worked for several years. In October 1971, the Summys purchased the business and operated it together until July 1 of this year, when Lyle was forced to retire from active work.

Lyle was a member of the Earlham American Legion Post and the Adel V.F.W. Post. He was also a member of the Earlham Lions Club and a past president of that organization, and an honorary fireman on the local department.

Lyle never cared to become involved with too many organizations but he always participated wholeheartedly in the activities of those he joined. His most consuming interest was the local fire department. Until ill health caused him to resign last spring, he worked hard to keep abreast of all the modern firefighting and first aid methods.

His outstanding characteristic was his love for people and his enjoyment in associating with them. His honesty and integrity, coupled with a grand sense of humor endeared him to all.

Remembering him with love always will be his wife Dolores; sons-Tery of Adel, Kenny of Earlham and Kevin of Ankeny; daughters-Arlene Kay Cockrum and Karla Day of Earlham; stepmother, Mrs. Bertha Summy of Menlo, five brothers-Vern of Yale, Richard of Pacifica, California, Raymond and Harold of Des Moines and Leonard of Carlisle; four sisters-Patti Lancaster of Santa Fe Springs, California, Ethel Kunkle of Stuart, Betty Bryan and Mary Kearns of Lewiston, Idaho; nine grandchildren-Robin and Jamie Summy of Adel; Stephanie and Chad Summy, Cristy, Robert and David Cockrum; and Jeremy Day, all of Earlham; Tim Summy of Ankeny and many other close relatives and friends.

Rev. Dave Higdon officiated at the memorial service which was held on Friday, December 10, at the Earlham United Methodist church. Gretchen Brittain provided the musical setting at the organ console.

Casket bearers were Gary Arnburg, Roy Harris, Bruce Koboldt, Eugene Lillie, Lloyd Love and Larry Slavens. Honorary casket bearers were Bob Bobst, Mike Bobst, Von Fletcher, Charles Fry, Les Goeldner, Leon Maxson, Richard Petersen and Amor Routh.

Interment was in the Earlham cemetery with McKee Funeral home in charge of the arrangements.
