Death of Eli Shepherd

St. Charles, May 10. Special – Eli Shepherd was born in Putnam county, Indiana, November 23, 1842, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Berlin, at Leon, May 5, 1929, aged 86 years, 5 months and 12 days. He came to Iowa with his parents when a small boy and settled near Boone, later moving to near St. Charles, where he had lived until of late years, when he had gone to Leon to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Berlin, to be cared for. In 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Kittie Leonard, of Nevada. To this union eight children were born, of which six are living: Ed, of Perry, Mrs. Anna Colclazier, of Des Moines; Mrs. Myrtle Berlin, of Boone, Mrs. Bessie Bell, of Perry; Mrs. Alma Bell of St. Charles, and Tom, of Wolf, Saskatchewan, Canada.

His remains were brought back here from Leon last Tuesday afternoon, and funeral services were held in the M. E. church, of which he was a member, conducted by the Rev. F. G. Barnes, assisted by the Rev. G. E. Carnahan, and his remains were laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery, by that of his wife, who died on August 2, 1899, and his daughter, Della, who died January 20, 1908, and his son, Ralph, who died September 19, 1912. He leaves 22 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
