Thursday, January 28, 1937Alzina Rosalia Burleson, daughter of Sidney K. and Sarah Burleson, was born in Coldwater, Michigan, December 6, 1848 and died January 19, 1937 after an illness of long standing, at the age of 88 years, one month and 13 days.
She was married to Willard Nelson Lease December 19, 1868 at Three Rivers, Michigan and came to Madison county in September 1870. She and her husband, with another couple came from Michigan in a covered wagon, making the trip in one month. They settled in Madison county, and made their home here the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Lease had been a resident of this county 67 years.
To Mr. and Mrs. Willard Nelson Lease was born one daughter, Sarah Katherine (Kittie), who preceded her in death 17 years ago. Mr. Lease died July 13, 1894. Mrs. Lease was the last surviving member of a family of 14 children.
She had been a member of the First Baptist church of Winterset a great many years.
She is survived by four grandchildren, Willard A. Gordon; Mildred Howell; Margaret Beerbower and George Gordon; also five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lease was one of the most favorable and widely known older residents of this county. She owned what is not the Hotel Hamilton and for many years served meals there. She was known for her fine hospitality and excellent meals. Many knew and loved her.
When her daughter died, Mrs. Lease cared for the grandchildren as her own children, and was a real mother to them.

Pioneer Woman Had Lived in Madison County for 67 Years
Mrs. A. R. Lease, a resident of Madison county, since 1870, died at her home at 318 East Buchanan, Winterset, on Tuesday after a long illness. She was 88 years old. (d. 1-19-1937)
Mrs. Lease was widely and favorably known in Winterset. For many years she operated what is now the Hotel Hamilton.
She was the former Alzina Rosalia Burleson, daughter of Sydney and Sarah Burleson and was born in Coldwater, Michigan on December 6, 1848.
She was married to Willard Nelson Lease on December 19, 1868 at Three Rivers Michigan and they came to Madison county in 1870. They and another couple made the trip here from Michigan in a covered wagon, spending a month on the way. Mrs. Lease was a resident of Madison county for 67 years.
She and her husband were the parents of one daughter, Sarah Katherine Gordon who preceded her in death seventeen years ago. Her husband also is dead.
Mrs. Lease was a long-time member of the First Baptist church of Winterset.
She is survived by four grandchildren; Willard A. Gordon, Mildred Howell, Margaret Beerbower, and George Gordon; as well as five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday from the Tidrick funeral home in Winterset in charge of the Rev. J. H. Cochran, pastor of the Baptist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
