OBITUARY

James Madison Speer, the son of Andrew and Nancy Speer, was born on a farm south of Earlham, February 20, 1864, and departed this life in the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, December 22, 1952, at the age of 88 years, 10 months and two days.

His early life was spent on the home farm some eight miles south of Earlham, where he lived his early life. After becoming of age, he homesteaded a farm in South Dakota. For several years he made this his home. Selling his South Dakota interests, he came back to Earlham and made this his home until his passing.

James was the oldest of 12 children, six boys and six girls. The boys and two sisters preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing, Mrs. Elizabeth Piatt, Mrs. Blanche Mark of Winterset; Mrs. Della Blomquist of Dexter, and Mrs. Mable Bricker of Earlham, a number of nephews, nieces, and other relatives, and a host of friends.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and took an active part in community affairs. For years he was a familiar character to be seen on our streets and was interested in community affairs. He was musically inclined and took great interest in various programs given by community interests. Declining years caused him to lay down life's activities.

Services were conducted from the Welch Funeral parlors Wednesday afternoon, December 24, by Rev. S. R. Overholser with burial in the Earlham cemetery.
