Former Sarah Clanton Was Member of Pioneer Family
St. Charles--Mrs. J. D. Peffley, member of the pioneer Clanton family in Madison county, died Tuesday, July 10 at her home here. She was 81 years of age.
Mrs. Peffley was the former Sarah Elizabeth Clanton. She was a granddaughter of Joel Clanton, who was a member of the famous Clanton-Clark family of early settlers in this county in 1846. With the Guye party, they were the first permanent residents of Madison county.
She was the only daughter of Charles Franklin and Barbara Ann Clanton and was born Oct. 4, 1869, on a farm near St. Charles. In 1885 she was married to Jefferson D. Peffley. They were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Mae Faust of St. Charles, and Anna Peffley at home.
The husband and father died in 1947. Besides the two daughters, she is survived by four grandsons and five great grandchildren.
She long was a member of the St. Charles Methodist church, having united with it in 1895, during the pastorate of the Rev. F. W. Ewan.
Funeral services were held July 12 from the St. Charles Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. Eldon Haworth. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
