OBITUARY

John W. Stevens, son of William and Nancy Hanks Stevens, was born in Salem, Henry county, Iowa, February 4, 1863 and departed this life, April 30, 1951 at the Broadlawn hospital, Des Moines, after a prolonged illness.

In 1894 John was married to Mrs. Arminta Elizabeth Hill, a widow, with a daughter, Lulu, and the following year they came to Earlham as their permanent home. Mrs. Stevens preceded him in death, October 21, 1927. With the exception of a few years in Toledo, Ohio, John spent most of his eighty-eight years in and near Earlham, living in Dexter part of this time. Because of health he spent the later years with or near his step-daughter, Mrs. Harry Wykoff, in Des Moines.

John's mother died when he was a small lad and, with his sister, Mary (Meek) frequently talked of the rigors of pioneer life on an Iowa prairie. His parents, two sisters, and a brother preceded him. Surviving are: Mrs. Harry Wykoff, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, a half brother, Charley Stevens of Omaha, Nebraska, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services were held in the Presbyterian church, Earlham, May 2, at 2 p.m. Rev. S. R. Overholser officiating. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
