MRS. ED M. SMITH DIED LAST SATURDAY OF HEART ATTACK

Wife of Madisonian Editor in Failing Health for Five Years

Mrs. Ed M. Smith, wife of the editor of the Winterset Madisonian, died at her home in Winterset Saturday night, of a heart attack, ending an illness of more than five years. Mrs. Smith was 77 years of age. She had been an invalid for the last 18 months.

Mrs. Smith was a life-long resident of Madison county, with the exception of two years, 1928 to 1930, when she lived in Des Moines while Mr. Smith served as Iowa secretary of state.

She was the former Evalyn Crossley, daughter of John W. and Cynthia Jane Crossley, and was born in Crawford township, Sept. 10, 1872. She attended the rural schools near her home and the Patterson school. She also attended the old Highland Park college in Des Moines and Iowa State Teachers college in Cedar Falls. As a young woman she taught school in Patterson, St. Charles and Winterset.

She was married to Ed M. Smith of Winterset on June 1, 1898. With the exception of the two years spent in Des Moines, their married life was spent in this community. They observed their Golden Wedding anniversary here in 1948.

As a girl, Mrs. Smith had joined the Methodist church at Patterson. After moving to Winterset, she transferred to the First Presbyterian church here, taking an active part in its affairs as long as her health permitted. She was also active in women's club work in this community.

She is survived by her husband, and three daughters, Mrs. Marion Moore of Winterset, Mrs. Ruth Graening of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Frances Fry of LaFayette, Calif.

She also leaves five grandchildren, John Edward Gorman of Independence, David and Gretchen Graening of Oklahoma City, James Wesley Fry, who is a student at Stanford university in California and Meredith Ann Fry of LaFayette, Calif; in addition to one sister, Mrs. Bertha Miles of Winterset; and three brothers, James J. Crossley of Portland, Ore., and John and Clyde Crossley of Winterset.

One daughter, Dorothy Smith preceded her in death as well as two grandchildren, Jane Graening of Oklahoma City and Ted Fry of LaFayette, Calif.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the First Presbyterian church in Winterset, in charge of the minister, the Rev. Clement D. Loehr. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
